I have a 1999 Hyundai Sonata 4 cylinder engine. It is a interference motor. Timing belt broke so I had that the timing belt and the other one, replaced at a shop. I picked it up from the shop and on the way home the car stalled out. The ECU fuse blew, changed it and had to charge the battery. I got it home and looked at it. I found that the alternator belt was about halfway off, so I fixed that. The engine is running real rough, shakes and I can hear a tapping (clicking) sound from inside the engine I believe. So the mechanic that replaced the timing belt said that he thinks it needs a new computer but I dont believe he is right, it wasn't messed up before and the engine ran alot smoother and didn't make a tapping sound. The sound seems like it is coming from the head. When you start the engine it reves high at about 1500 rpm and slowly goes down. What do youll think it is? Do you think the timing belt was put on wrong? What order should I check stuff in? Thank you very much I really need help to fix this car.
when the timing belt broke you bent the valve's that's why they call it interference the valve hits the pistonyeah, when your timing belt breaks the valves in the engine hit the piston causing them to bend and sometimes break, so 100% your valves are bent, that tapping noise is definently the valve
basically, you have 2 options, fix the valves which will require pulling out the engine heads and replacing them, this a 2000 dollar job, LOTS of work involved
or you can junk the car
those are the only things you can do, if you dont fix it soon, your car is finished for good
as you stated your car has an interference motor which means if your timing belt breaks your engine is damaged, a non interference engine is a an engine where when the timing belt breaks, there is will be no damage to the engine
also your mechanic is an idiot, he should know that the vavles are damaged, he is probably trying to milk as much money as he can from you and hiding the real problem
sorry for you troubles, but unless your willing to fork out thousands of dollars your car is finished and it wont last much longerIf the timing belt broke it may have bent a valve, this could account for the tapping noise due to a valve not closing due to damage from belt failure, check to see if belt is correctly fitted and do a compression test .#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
