Thailand: Spread of Avian Influenza Discovered Among Multiple Bird Species in Urban Areas This Year

8/23/07 [translated text] National media reports statements from the Head of the Influenza Foundation who said that 7,194 influenza cases have been identified nationwide during the first six months of 2007. Of which, 578 cases, including 12 fatalities, were influenza A, H3 subtype, 34 cases were influenza A, H1 subtype, and six cases were identified as influenza B. The South region of Thailand is reportedly the most influenza-affected, followed by the Central, North, and Northeast regions.
In addition, the official notes that this year poultry including chickens, ducks, and Asian openbill storks were not commonly found infected with avian influenza. However, the spread of avian influenza was discovered among long-tailed tailorbirds, sparrows, and spotted munias in urban areas. In addition, Thailand reportedly has identified one suspect case of human-to-human avian influenza transmission in Phitsanulok Province [where an avian influenza outbreak occurred on 15 January 2007].
[The Thai Ministry of Health’s Bureau of Epidemiology reported on 21 August that there have been 1,654 pneumonia and influenza cases identified in 67 provinces under surveillance of by the Provincial Health Offices and Disease Prevention and Control Regional Offices since 1 January 2007.]

    .

  • This isn't correct, is it?

The possible/probable H2H cluster in Thailand is from 2004 and that family was from Kamphaeng Phet province, not Phitsanulok:

Has there been another H2H cluster from Thailand?

There was an outbreak in poultry in Phitsanulok in January of this year, but I don't think any people were involved.

Kamphaeng Phet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamphaeng_Phet_Province) province does border on Phitsanulok. Perhaps the journalist(?) remembered the details incorrectly.

Four family members in Thai northern province of Phitsanulok are suspected to be infected with avian flu after they ate a dead duck from their farm, Thai local media reported on Thursday.
Thawatchai Kamoltham, the Phitsanulok provincial health chief, said Thursday that four members of a family in Phitsanulok fell sick after ate a dead duck recently. Since their symptoms are similar to those of the deadly H5N1 bird flu (http://english.people.com.cn/zhuanti/Zhuanti_380.html) virus, they are now been isolated in a nearby hospital.
Local health authorities had declared the duck farm in Tortae sub-district of Phitsanulok off-limits for two weeks as a precaution. About 600 ducks in the farm have been slaughtered, Thawatchai was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying.

Yeah, but they were never even confirmed as having H5N1, let alone be suspected of being an H2H cluster. Maybe the journalist(?) mixed up that family with the family from 2004?

    Theresa42 your recollections are correct.

There have been no WHO confirmed human cases in Thailand in 2007. The last human cluster in Thailand was in October of 2005 in Kanchanaburi, a father (died) and a son (recovered), both confirmed.
