History of a Law Firm

Posted in: zjnq.com Date: March 9th, 2010

  • The long time Washington DC law firm of Clifford & Warnke (Clark Clifford and Paul Warnke) disappeared after Clifford's envolvement in the 90s BCCI scandal. What happened to the firm? With whom did it merge or get bought out by?

  • In 2000, Howrey Simon merged with Arnold White & Durkee to form Howrey Simon Arnold & White, as the firm is now called. See http://www.howrey.com/news/index.cfm?fuseaction=news&newsid=1176 (3rd paragraph)

  • Was Howrey & Simon acquire later by maybe Jones Day?

  • Howrey and Simon is still actively in business, as you can see at their website: http://www.howrey.com/ If I have misunderstood your follow-up question, just let me know what sort of additional information you need, and I'm happy to assist you. pafalafa-ga

  • Quick and point on.

  • dolphhass-ga, The firm of Clifford and Warnke was not acquired. It dissolved towards the end of 1991 in the wake of the BCCI scandal. The largest contingent of C&W lawyers and staff were acquired by another DC law firm, Howrey & Simon. The distribution of ex-C&W personnel -- as far as is publicly known -- is as follows: Howrey & Simon: Paul Warnke; managing partner Harold D. Murry Jr; John F. Kovin; John G. Calender; Philip H. Hecht; James C. Duff; along with Associates Katherine D. McManus, Peder A. Garske and Dennis A. Tosh DC office of Hughes Hubbard & Reed: Robert Reznick Mayer, Brown & Platt: Associate Kathryn A. Kusske Spriggs & Hollingsworth: Charles J. Fromm Former partner Bryan J. Yolles joined an unspecified advertising agency. In January 1992, Altman formally established the law offices of Robert A. Altman, with Clark Clifford as counsel. The dissolution of C&W was important due to the ethical rules under which lawyers practice. As noted by the Washington Post (12/3/91): "Warnke and Murry spent their first day with Howrey & Simon traveling to Australia to notify a longtime Clifford & Warnke client, the Australian Meat & Livestock Corp., of their change....Lawyers operate under ethical rules that say clients belong to the firm, rather than the lawyer, and should not be solicited when a lawyer leaves. But when firms break up, lawyers are permitted to tell clients they are leaving..." The key newpaper articles I found containing information on the fate of Clifford and Warnke are: The Washington Post September 10, 1992 page D10 L.A. Law Firm Is Acquired By Howrey The Washington Post December 3, 1991 page C1 Warnke, Others Leave Clark Clifford Law Firm I trust this information fully answers your question.
